As the Gaia-X Hub for Canada, designated by the Gaia-X Association, Digital Trust Canada is the bridge between Canada and the Gaia-X global trust framework — connecting Canada to the world through trusted, interoperable digital infrastructure, advancing productivity, trusted data exchange, and Canadian innovation, while mobilizing organizations and partners across the country to strengthen our digital resilience and sovereignty.
What is Gaia-X
Gaia-X — officially the Gaia-X European Association for Data and Cloud AISBL — is a global trust framework: technology-agnostic, governance-neutral, and legally grounded, that lets organizations prove who they are, verify who they’re dealing with, and exchange data securely, without any single company or country controlling the system. It’s a European-born initiative with global reach, bringing together companies, governments, and research institutions to create trusted connections between data ecosystems, each on its own terms.

A Growing Global Trust Framework
The Gaia-X Trust Framework no longer stops at Europe’s edge — its network of Hubs now includes Canada, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Each Hub joined for the same reason: a federated, trusted, and interoperable model where every jurisdiction keeps its own sovereignty and its own rules.
The Trust Framework doesn’t tell you who to trust — it creates the transparency so you can decide for yourself.
Why It Matters
Today’s value chains cross partners, jurisdictions, and industries — and data itself is a strategic asset, not just a byproduct: the raw material behind research breakthroughs, economic growth, and national resilience. This is most visible in how AI systems are built and trusted, and in the new trade corridors Canada is working to open. Realizing that value means research institutions, governments, and companies all need to trust the same data without giving up their sovereignty: control of their own data, their own rules, their own systems.
At Home
Diversifying our markets, strengthening supply chain resilience, and removing internal barriers to trade — trusted data exchange accelerates the impact.
Abroad
Giving Canadian organizations access to the Gaia-X Trust Framework and the data ecosystems it connects across sectors and industries — securing supply chains, improving productivity, and opening new trade corridors on our own terms.
Canada is itself a federation — provincial and territorial standards and laws, alongside the rights of Indigenous Nations to govern their own data. Rather than starting over, Canada can leverage the global Gaia-X Trust Framework: open source and built on the principle of Bring Your Own Rules, it lets these frameworks interoperate without overriding one another, building on the work already underway.

Our Role
We are the bridge between Canada and the global trust framework. As the Gaia-X Hub for Canada, DTC connects Canadian work in digital trust to a growing global network — and brings Canadian perspectives back into how that framework evolves. We don’t replace Canadian standards or initiatives; we help them interoperate.
Working level
Policy and Rules Committee & Technical Committee
Active participation in Gaia-X’s Season 2.0 — contributing to how its open framework can support interoperability at home and abroad, to the benefit of Canadian industries and sectors.
Governance level
International Advisory Board
DTC sits on the Gaia-X’s International Advisory Board, which brings non-EU perspectives into the framework’s governance — ensuring Canadian stakeholders are heard as it evolves.
In Canada, we act as a neutral, industry and ecosystem-agnostic convener — bringing governments, industry, research, and standards bodies together on work already aligned with key Canadian priorities.
Where This Matters
Supply Chain Enablement
Verifying origin, Canadian content, and supplier credentials in real time — the foundation of paperless trade. We welcome Canada’s progress on paperless trade and, as EU Digital Product Passport requirements approach, are working through Gaia-X on COMPLIANCE4DPP.
AI Trust Foundation
As AI systems increasingly act on data they didn’t create, verifiable credentials and provable data provenance become the difference between trustworthy automation and expensive guesswork.
Data Sovereignty
Enabling data sovereignty — where data resides and how it is governed can be verified, and each group’s governance requirements are respected, across government, industry, research, and innovation.
Real Examples
This isn’t theory. Gaia-X Lighthouse Projects are where trusted data sharing gets real — in aerospace, AI and health. Through Gaia-X Hub Canada, Canadian companies can explore where they fit.
DECADE-X
Aerospace & defence supply chains — a sovereign, interoperable digital ecosystem founded by Airbus, BoostAeroSpace, Collins Aerospace, Liebherr and Thales, built for trusted collaboration across 10,000 suppliers.
PONTUS-X
Cross-industry data and AI collaboration — the largest publicly available Gaia-X ecosystem, with 450+ participants in 23 countries, a transatlantic partner network, and the Gaia-X Trust Framework running at scale.
HEALTH-X dataLOFT
A federated, citizen-centred health data space where individuals stay in control of their own health data — proof that sensitive data can be shared securely across hospitals, clinicians and researchers without centralizing it.

Convening Canada
Being the bridge means doing the convening work. We bring together government, industry, research, standards bodies, and civil society to shape what a connected, sovereign, interoperable Canada looks like — building on the work already underway here and connecting it to Gaia-X’s growing global trust framework.
Our focus now: laying the foundations for Canada’s place in the global trust framework — and putting it to work in real Canadian use cases.
Whether you’re already doing digital trust work, exploring a pilot in your sector, or want Canadian priorities reflected in how the global framework evolves — let’s talk.
